I’m SO INTO this Jewish Backyard Halloween Wedding!
Sometimes, in this career, I have weddings that make me sit back and go, “what the hell did I do to deserve a client like this?”
Occasionally, I don’t mean that positively. Yet sometimes, like this wedding, I sit back and go, “HOW DO I GET MORE WEDDINGS LIKE THIS?”
Melanie and Craig…they’re lifelong friends now. They have to be. I can’t live a life where they aren’t. Whats funny is once again, I never expected to become so connected to a client. I *want* to be but not everyone actually wants to go crazy and drink with their photographer, go to a renaissance faire, etc. The ren faire was so much fun though! These two met while playing WORLD OF WARCRAFT and dressed up as their characters from when they met. You can check out the blog here if you’re curious to see how amazing they looked! I dressed up as a wench, drank some mead and froze my butt off (but bought a gorgeous cape, so it balances out). These two are so wonderfully diverse in their talents, but are so happy together, that an outsider would be hardpressed to deny the existence of soul mates.
These two though, I remember how they were the only two to show up to a happy hour I planned in the Spring, so it was them with Brian and I…and we drank ourselves silly for like four hours. When they ended up moving to Connecticut, I was devastated. Okay not like sobbing like a baby, but so many times I would think, “man, I should invite Melanie and Craig to this,” AND I COULDN’T. I’ll never forget though, how Craig won the Ugly Sweater contest at my client holiday party. SERIOUSLY, HOW ARE THESE TWO SUCH WINNERS?!
So as their wedding grew closer, I just got more and more excited. It was in Monroe, Connecticut, twenty minutes from my grandparents house, so guess where I got to stay? You bet. I even got to argue with them about my dairy allergy (that also seems to be a gluten allergy but I can’t face that yet). REGARDLESS, I was so very very excited for the wedding. Brian was sad he didn’t come and in hindsight, we should make it a rule that he comes to ALL destination weddings from now on! Although we would have struggled sleep apart in my grandparent’s twin beds…(i’m totally kidding).
SO THERE I WAS: in Monroe, Connecticut! It rained a little earlier in the day, but the sun was peaking out and drying up the ground. Imagine my joy when I saw it was entirely Halloween themed. Masks on the table, flowers with eyeballs in them, all of the guests basically in black. It was like a funeral, except not. And then they had amazing pizza, a pink drink (whose recipe I desperately need in my life) and Melanie also ordered me creamless Risotto. I left the wedding feeling full on food, alcohol and happiness, eager to get home and edit everything!
What’s even better is that after all of this amazingness, Melanie and Craig wrote me an amazing review! I’m so excited to share this with you!
“I’ve been trying to write this review for two hours. I just can’t seem to find words that express how truly grateful we are that Jenna came into our lives. When we first met this pink-haired tornado of a woman, she said “I only work with weirdos”. It was love at first sass.
Over the last year, we’ve exchanged emails about our cats, had drinks with her puppy at a bar, won a lava lamp at her Christmas party, played Ski-ball together, had dinner with her and her boyfriend, and froze our asses off at a Renaissance Faire.
What I’m trying to say is that while hiring a wedding photographer is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, hiring Jenna is really more like gaining a once-in-a-lifetime friend. Her creativity is unmatched. Her ability to handle a giant group of our drama-loving dysfunctional families was beyond impressive. Her support and instruction on our wedding day was so reassuring. Jenna took pictures of two awkward nerds that made us look like fucking models. I can’t wait to show my grandkids my wedding pictures and be like “look at what a fucking babe I was.”
Jenna’s a badass warrior woman with a shining soul. She’s a firework. A unicorn. If you don’t hire her, you’ll probably regret it.”
I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING. Okay, I cried when I read it. Some clients never even say thank you after I send over their wedding photos. So their kindness again just lifts me the fuck up and reminds me WHY I do this, through pain and exhaustion. I love my job.
I’m going back to Connecticut next year for my grandfather’s 80th birthday, maybe they’ll let Brian and I stay with them. And we can go have fun and just be cool and life will be awesome.
EVERYTHING ELSE done by friends/family/bride/groom. Melanie legit was organizing vegetable platters twenty minutes before the first look. I loved the group effort put in by everyone on the day of. No one made it about themselves, they just came together to get it done!
