In Iceland, there is a saying: “Don’t like the weather? Wait five minutes!”
Unfortunately, this saying did NOT apply to Lisa and Colin’s Iceland wedding! It rained from beginning to end, sideways, fast and wet. We had all sorts of plan a’s mapped out, but plan b’s…were definitely spontaneous and on the spot! Luckily, for these two sailors from Seattle, it was just another walk in the park! I zipped up my water proof jacket, slide on my waterproof warm boots and loaded up on layers, because wedding days wait for no one.
It was a fantastic day regardless, and their guests were WONDERFUL and kind. The rain stopped no one from enjoying the simple celebration of love. I somehow photographed this wedding with bare bones essential gear, since I’m traveling for five months and couldn’t pack my entire arsenal. This made me sad at times, because sometimes I was like, “DAMN I WISH I HAD THAT LENS” but in reality, with such a small event with simply happy people, overkill would have been just that: overkill.
Their love for one another was infectious. Colin cracked me up, with his little noises of happiness. Someone asked him later in the evening if he’d had a good day. He laughed and said, “well, I got married today. No big deal!”
The tears, the laughter, the dedication. It was pure magic!
I’d like to give a shoutout to the vendors involved, because their kindness and perseverance helped make this day much more smooth! First, Pink Iceland for organizing everything for them, as well as having a man on the ground guiding everyone.
Second, Hárstofa Hellubíó for kick ass hair and makeup! Holy crap they did an excellent job! Lisa’s hair didn’t budge an INCH! Honestly, I was super impressed!
Finally, Stracta Hotel, where I also had the pleasure of staying at for the night. Their decor is simplistic and modern, with a nod to the surrounding nature of Iceland. Absolute perfection, with hot tubs too.
my first wedding in Iceland was an ass kicker. It was absolutely worth it though, because Lisa and Colin were willing to get soaked for it. When a couple is willing to embark on the ultimate adventure, I will always meet them to the challenge. Thanks again to you both for being badass.
